Porsche has confirmed that at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, it will release a motorsport version of its Cayman GT4.
Already in an interview with ex-Porsche CEO Matthias Müller a couple of years ago, did he mention to CAR that such a car is a possibility.
Porsche hasn’t released any pictures yet, but it is rather obvious what we can expect from this race car. The company is no stranger to racing cars, and it will use its decades of racing 911s to good use with the upcoming Cayman race car.
What we do know is that the same 3,8-litre, flat-six engine used in the road car will power the race car. A PDK transmission with steering wheel-fixed gearshift paddles will replace the manual transmission from the road car.
While the front suspension of the Cayman GT4 is similar to that of the 991 GT3 road car, the GT4 Clubsport race car will benefit from the GT3 Cup race car’s suspension.
Expect the usual other race car additions such as a larger rear wing and better engine, transmission and brake cooling. The interior will be stripped out, although it will gain a full roll cage and the necessary buttons and switches to comply with regulations.
The car will be homologated for a number of specific race series on an international level, as well as specific to USA.
What does this mean for the general, but enthusiastic, car buyer? It could mean that Porsche is considering a hardcore Cayman GT4 RS.
