Raised ride-height? Check. Extra body-cladding? Yip. All-wheel drive? Present. Volvo Cars has unveiled the V90 Cross Country, and it has been confirmed for South African introduction.
The new, lifted (by 60 mm) model completes the latest-generation 90 Series line-up, and sits alongside its XC90 SUV, S90 sedan and V90 estate siblings.
“Our cars are well known for their safety, strength and durability. With all-wheel drive, increased ride-height, and a chassis optimised for comfort and control in all weather and road conditions, the new V90 Cross Country takes our versatile V90 estate and adds the heart of an explorer,” said Peter Mertens, senior vice-president of research and development at Volvo.
The Swedish brand says the V90 Cross Country has undergone “rigorous testing” – from the frozen north of Sweden to the desert heat of Arizona – to ensure that it can survive “extremes”.
Somewhere between those extremes sits South Africa, and the country’s raised wagon fans will be thrilled to hear that the V90 Cross Country is destined for local roads (the V90 estate, of course, isn’t). Indeed, the local arm of the automaker has revealed that timing and availability of this latest model are currently in the “planning stages”.
The new vehicle will be built at the brand’s Torslanda Plant in Sweden, and is expected to offer the same all-wheel drive powertrains as its 90 Series siblings.
