Cape Town off-road enthusiasts who are still suffering from withdrawal symptoms after dealing with the beach ban will have something to rave about this weekend at the 2002 4×4 Expo to be held at Thunder City from Friday until Sunday.
Cape Town off-road enthusiasts will find plenty to rave about at the 2002 4×4 Expo to be held at Thunder City from Friday, March 15, until Sunday.
The event, which has been held since 1999, will include vehicles, gear, accessories and products related to the 4×4 experience. "This year’s expo is dedicated, as in the past, to everything to do with four-wheel drive, off-road and outdoor activities,” said organiser Greg van der Reis.
Van der Reis said there would be plenty of special deals on 4×4 vehicles, equipment and various driver-training courses.
"The recently imposed 4×4 beach ban has reduced the number of options for 4×4 off-road enthusiasts so seeing and testing the two courses at Thunder City (the one course is for beginners, the other for advanced drivers) will be a wonderful opportunity for folks in the Western Cape," Van der Reis said.
He said Thunder City had fantastic facilities. "It has a dedicated 1,8km 4×4 track, a quad biking course, the availability of vehicles which visitors can test drive on the track, a spectator viewing platform, a 4×4 centre, a beer tent, large exhibition area under cover, ample secure parking, 24-hour security, trailers and rooftop tents, a dam for the watercraft and a huge grassed picnic/braai area.
"It is common knowledge that only around 10 per cent of all 4×4 vehicle owners actually travel on serious off road adventures. We are hoping that our Expo, with all the various exhibits on view, will attract and motivate a new generation of 4x4ers to enjoy one of life’s most pleasurable outdoor pursuits,” said Van der Reis.
“The added attraction of being able to view the world’s largest civilian operated squadron of 13 ex-combat jets is a plus factor. Thunder City is also well located with easy access from all parts of Greater Cape Town and being at Cape Town International Airport is especially convenient for our out-of-town exhibitors from Gauteng who need to transport equipment for the Expo."
There will also be helicopter flips costing R375 per seat (minimum four) for a full hour. The Thunder City Piaggio Albatross twin-engined aircraft will be available for flights around Cape Town for approximately 40 minutes at R2 300 per flight or R460 per person.
The Expo opens at 9am until 6pm daily from Friday to Sunday. The entrance fee is R15 per person.
Meanwhile in another part of Cape Town, one of Thunder City’s English Electric Lighting fighter jets will fly over the Killarney race circuit during the lunch interval of the Vodacom Power Tour Killarney Race Day on Saturday.
This jet is one of only three of its kind flying in the world, and will provide spectators and competitors alike with a "truly special and memorable experience," Cecile Brody, spokesman for Pole Position Promotions said this week.
The jet will be piloted by one of Thunder City’s directors and avid fighter pilot, Mike Beachy Head, who recently featured on M-Net’s actuality programme .
