The definitive shape of green motoring and pioneer of consumer-viable hybrid technology has undergone a number changes to keep it fresh for 2012. Never before has a combined fuel consumption figure of 3,9 litres/100 km looked so inviting and goes some way to explaining the world-wide sales success of the Prius.
Styling
Cosmetically the Prius has new front bumper and LED headlights – styled to fall in line with Toyota’s new design approach. New light clusters at the rear and special areo-hubcaps complete the look.
Inside, the changes in trim materials used enhances the quality feel of the cabin. The new front seats are wider and offer a greater range of adjustment. The centre console has been redesigned to offer easier access to ancillary controls.
Equipment
The Exclusive model offers a long list of standard equipment which makes the package even more appealing:
• Solar roof panel supplying power to the HVAC system to ensure a cool cabin when you park in the sun;
• Centre touchscreen to control all multimedia, sat-nav and to display the view from the rear facing camera;
• Head-up driver’s display;
• Eight-speaker JBL audio system;
• Park assist that automatically parks the car (parallel and alley).
Hybrid drive
The well-proven design combines a 1,8-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver the drive through a CVT transmission. The focus is on fuel economy and smoothness but the Prius still manages a respectable zero to 100 km/h time of 10,4 seconds.
Pricing
The Exclusive is priced at R370 000, which includes a five year/90 000km service plan and three year/100 000 km warranty.
