In terms of pure sales, many punters would wager that the large luxury sedan crown belongs to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Others might suggest the BMW 7 Series is at the very top of the pile.
But, in the United States at least, neither one is the current sales champion. Yes, Bloomberg managed to lay its hands on “internal” sales data from Tesla for the third quarter of 2016, and the statistics make for interesting reading.
According to the US publication, Tesla sold a whopping 9 156 units of its Model S electric sedan in the States in Q3, while the 7 Series could manage just 3 634 and the S-Class only 3 138. That means Elon Musk’s electric sedan beat the combined efforts of the two German stalwarts.
Tesla furthermore told Digital Trends that it was being “conservative” with the sales figure.
“Our Q3 delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct,” Tesla said.
The electric automaker saw its US sales soar some 59% in the third quarter of this year, with its Model X crossover weighing in with an impressive 5 428 units.
