It’s fairly well known that Toyota and BMW are currently working together on a pair of new sports cars. And the rumour mill has suggested more than once that the Toyota-badged version will bear the Supra nameplate.
And now a report out of Australia says that even Toyota’s chief engineer is keen on the revival of the iconic badge, with the name having been trademarked in Europe earlier this year.
“I love the Supra and I love the name Supra,” Tetsuya Tada told CarAdvice.
“It’s historically important to Toyota. We’re pushing for the name Supra for the new car we are developing with BMW,” he revealed.
He added that the Japanese automaker’s tie-up with BMW was bearing fruit.
“I’d say the partnership is going well, very smooth. We’re testing all over the world too, not just Fuji or Nurburgring, but all [around] the world.”
Reports suggest that the two sports cars will go into production in 2018.
Toyota, of course, offered a possible preview of its new sports car at the Detroit Motor Show back in January 2014, when it unveiled the front-engine, rear-wheel drive FT-1 concept pictured above.
