Upcoming Audi A4’s optional Matrix LED headlamps [w/video]

Audi is hard at work promoting the new A4 compact executive sedan, evident in the latest video by the Ingolstadt-based firm, which shows off the upcoming model’s optional Matrix LED headlamps.

It’s believed that the new (B9) generation comes with standard Xenon Plus headlamps in certain markets, while customers who want to have the new Matrix LED clusters will have to fork out a bit extra.

The actual unit, with 11 light diodes that require only 20 watts of power, is said to resemble a human eye in the low beam setting – while the full beam is powered by 12 LEDs. The light provided by the high beams is dependent on the data relayed to the ECU by a camera that’s mounted on the rear-view mirror. The control unit is able to switch off individual units, and is capable of 64 dimming variations.

Audi claims that this lighting technology allows the Matrix LED system to distribute light in millions of possible combinations so as not to disturb other motorists. Also, the cornering function is able to read the signal from the optional MMI Navigation Plus system even before the driver has turned the steering wheel for a bend and steer the beams accordingly.
