A Volkswagen official has confirmed that the Wolfsburg brand is considering building a Clubsport version of its new Polo GTI.
Speaking to Car Throttle, Martin Hube, spokesperson for VW’s mid-size/full-size product line, said that a more powerful variant of the B-segment blaster was on the table.
“There are papers existing for a so-called ‘Clubsport’ version for the Polo,” Hube said, according to the British website.
“We are thinking about a 265hp [195 kW] version with the [limited] slip differential that we have in the Clubsport Golf. So there is something possible with the Polo,” he confirmed.
When asked whether a Polo Clubsport with that sort of power – seemingly borrowing the 195 kW version of VW’s EA888 turbocharged 2,0 litre engine used in the Golf Clubsport – would tread on the toes of the rest of the Golf GTI range, Hube suggested this wouldn’t be a problem.
“We all know the Golf is waiting for the next generation, so now is the possibility for the Polo to put the Golf under pressure, with no doubt. At the moment you can do it,” said Hube, who earlier confirmed the existence of a VR6-powered Arteon R prototype.
