Volkswagen South Africa has finally decided to add the five-door Up city car to its local range, and pricing is already out.
The three-door Up was introduced to South Africa back in February 2015. At the time, the local arm of the Wolfsburg automaker opted not to bring in the five-door variant, largely due to the chance it would cannibalise Polo Vivo sales.
But now the five-door – powered by the same 55 kW three-pot – has been confirmed, along with a crossover model dubbed the Cross Up (the latter with a 15 mm increase in ride height and black body-cladding, priced at R181 400).
The base five-door is priced at R156 300, just R3 800 more than the three-door equivalent. The cheapest Polo Vivo (the 1,4 Conceptline hatchback), meanwhile, comes in at R163 850.
The revised Up range runs all the way through to the flagship Colour Up, which tips the price scales at R185 000, while the Polo Vivo line-up is topped by the 1.6 GTS (at R199 900).
An optional infotainment system, which offers Bluetooth connectivity, an SD card reader and applications that display information related to the vehicle, is now also available. The five-inch colour touchscreen sits on bracket above the centre console and is connected to the electronics of the vehicle.
Interestingly, the addition of these new five-door models comes ahead of the arrival of the facelifted VW Up, which is scheduled to roll onto local dealer floors in early 2017.
