We’ve seen leaked images and even model cars but finally the cover has been pulled off the Volvo V90 estate. This new model expands the “90” family of the Swedish brand, which includes the S90 sedan and XC90 SUV.
“We have a very strong position in the estate segment,” says Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “In many people’s minds we are known as the definitive estate brand. While the Volvo brand today stands for more than estates, we are proud to carry forward this rich heritage with the V90.”
Shared underpinnings
Like its siblings the V90 is based on the company’s fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). As a result the powertrain offerings are similar to other “90” models. A new PowerPulse diesel derivative is on the cards alongside the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain – which offers around 300 kW and a pure electric range of around 50 km.
Safety ensured
The new V90 features Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology. This system includes with large animal detection and run-off road mitigation, and class-leading connectivity.
“The modern premium estate is all about the intriguing combination of a luxurious experience with the functional origins of an estate’s silhouette. The sophisticated ambience of our new Volvo interiors is combined with great cargo space, providing the right kind of functionality – either through connectivity or cargo and storage solutions,” says Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president for design at Volvo Cars.
The all-new Volvo V90 is currently not planned for South African introduction, owing to small market demands.
