In celebration of the venerable hot hatch’s upcoming 40th birthday, Volkswagen today confirmed that it will build the GTI Clubsport. The vehicle will be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show and continue the tradition of special editions to celebrate every milestone of the GTI’s career.
Under the Clubsport’s bonnet nestles the familiar 2,0-litre turbopetrol, but it’s been tuned to produce 195 kW. An additional 10% of power is available for 10 seconds on overboost when the driver fully depresses the throttle.
Thanks to the increase in power, the Clubsport manual can hit 100 km/h from standstill in a mere 6,2 seconds before topping out at 250 km/h. The DSG-equipped version, meanwhile, slashes the acceleration time to just 5,9 seconds.
Alongside the engine upgrades, the Clubsport will feature a contrasting black roof, new front bumper, side sills and rear diffuser, multi-part rear spoiler and forged 18-inch alloy wheels. Referencing the original GTI, the Clubsport has a wide black trim stripe running between the wheelarches.
Inside, tartan seat trim is standard, but it now covers deeper bucket seats, while there’s also honeycomb-patterned trim on the instrument panel, centre console and doors. VW has also used Alcantara extensively.
VWSA hasn’t yet decided whether the Clubsport will be offered locally.
