We didn’t see much of the limited and exclusively left-hand drive 182 kW Polo R WRC after it was revealed in 2012. It maintained a 2 500 unit run and sold for R380 000 and for those who felt that this model isn’t extreme enough as standard, Wimmer Rennsporttechnik has provided a drastic enhancement.
This Polo R still makes use of the Golf GTI’s 2,0-litre turbocharged engine but it has been pushed up to 309 kW and 480 N.m of torque to the front wheels through a standard DSG transmission. It’s able to achieve this power figure thanks to a modified turbocharger, high pressure pump, custom stainless steel exhaust system and a revised ECU and intercooler.
Wimmer Rennsporttechnik has not given a claimed 0-100 km/h time but, as a result of this enhancement, the Polo R will achieve a top speed of 280 km/h.
The upgrades will cost €10 200 (R168 000) but for an added amount you can also spec the Polo R with 17-inch OZ wheels, a KW coilover suspension and a K&N air filter.
