Audi launches S trio

Audi has released a trio of S-badged performance models in the guises of the S6, S7 and S8 on the local market. In addition to sporty design elements, these new models herald the first outing for the company’s 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8.

In essence, Audi’s S treatment is touted as a means of injecting an (impressive) degree of performance into a number of the staples in the range without erring on the side of blistering performance, and at times compromised practicality, that distinguish RS-badged models.

At the heart of these models lies a 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 in two states of tune. In the S6 and S7 this unit is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and develops 309 kW and 550 N.m of torque. The S8 receives an uprated version of the same engine that pushes out 328 kW and 650 N.m of torque, but in the case of the range-topper this unit is coupled with an eight-speed Tiptronic ‘box.

This unit propels the S6 from standstill to 100 km/h in 4,6 seconds, while the S7 does the same run in 4,7 seconds. The S8’s additional grunt is reflected in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of just 4,2 seconds.

While the performance on offer is impressive, the twin-turbo V8 also has a couple of fuel-saving tricks up its sleeve. This unit features a cylinder deactivation system that turns the engine into a V4 under light throttle loads and constant speeds where applicable.

All of these models feature Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system as standard, but in the case of the S8 this setup can be augmented by an electric sports differential that apportions torque between the rear wheels to sharpen up turn-in and counter understeer. An active noise control system comprising specially actuated engine mounts help to counter any unwanted resonance and vibrations that V4 engine operation would otherwise entail. Audi claims a fuel saving of up to 10 per cent during highway driving with the S6 and S7 averaging 9,6 L/100 km and the S8 10,2 L/100 km.

In terms of exterior highlights, these models can be distinguished from workaday stablemates by such details as black brake callipers with model designating logos, S6/S7/S8 decals on the bumpers and aluminium trim for the grille surround, exhaust finishers and wind mirrors. The S6 and S7 feature xenon plus headlamps as standard, while the S8 features full-LED items.

The cabin treatment also gets a visual boost with the addition of grey-backed dials with white needles and aluminium trim highlights, while the S6 and S7 get Audi’s S sports seats. The seats in the S8 are model-specific items with power adjustment. All three models also receive Audi’s connect module (online connectivity and wireless LAN) as well as infotainment interface and navigation.
