Not all that long ago, we lived in an era in which Opel stood proudly in the large family saloon market. Back then a middle-class family man had to choose between a Rekord, a Mazda 626 or a Toyota Camry if he didn’t have enought loot for a Nissan Maxima or Audi 500, let alone a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Opel, then under the custodianship of the Delta Motor Corporation, had a penchant for sticking GSi badges on all its performance products. In the case of the Rekord, peak power of 130 kW came courtesy of a 3,8-litre V6 and when CAR tested the motor for the November 1992 issue, the 380i version recorded a zero to 100 km/h time of a hot hatch rivalling 8,9 seconds. Suffice to say these big-engined Opels made for great long-distance cruisers and towing vehicles… Those were the days.
