The fifth stage of Dakar 2018 saw Peugeot driver Sebastien Leob forced to retire from the competition after navigator Daniel Elena sustained an injury.
Teammate Stephane Petehansel, meanwhile, won the 268 km Stage 5 to lengthen his overall lead by 30 minutes over Carlos Sainz (also in a Peugeot). Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Bernhard ten Brinke (now up to third overall) and Giniel de Villiers (in fifth overall) made the podium on the day, forcing Sainz into fourth.
Nasser Al-Attiyah was down in fifth position after his Hilux suffered some transmission issues and required a gearbox change.
South Africa’s Hennie de Klerk in a South Racing Volkswagen Amarok finished Stage 5 in 37th place, putting him in 33rd position overall. Lucio Alvarez, with South African navigator Rob Howie beside him in a Hilux, finished in 16th on the fifth stage, moving up to 16th overall.
