Since its re-entrance to the World Endurance Championship, Porsche has seen plenty of success in the LMP1 class, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours for the past three years. But a fresh report by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung suggests that the German manufacturer will soon announce its departure from the sport.
The German publication reports that the apparent decision to leave WEC at the end of the current season comes from the Volkswagen Group and that an official statement will be released in due course.
If it does turn out to be true, Porsche will join the likes of Audi’s WEC team and VW’s WRC team, both of which have already exited their respective sports in order to help the VW Group recover from the financial impact of the emissions scandal.
Rumour has it that Porsche’s yearly expense for competing in the WEC is around the €250-million (about R3,8-billion).
If Porsche does quit, that would leave Toyota as the only competitor in LMP1, which suggests we could be witnessing the end of the class altogether…
