According to a local newspaper report, Killarney Raceway in Cape Town is in the running to host a round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2017.
The Cape Argus reports that representatives of the series’ promoters are currently in Cape Town talking to Killarney officials.
The series currently consists of 12 two-day events held on closed circuits featuring mixed surfaces. Each round comprises four qualifying heats, two semi-finals, and a six-car final.
Norwegian maestro Petter Solberg claimed the title in both 2014 and 2015 in his Citroën DS3, but is currently sitting second behind Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom (who runs an Audi A1), with six rounds to go. Andreas Bakkerud (Ford Focus RS) is in third, while Sébastien Loeb is fourth in his Peugeot 208.
If Killarney does indeed secure a slot on the calendar for South Africa, it will likely be late in 2017, the report suggested.
