The Volkswagen ID R Pikes Peak has been officially revealed ahead of its assault on the legendary hillclimb after which it is named.
The ID R boasts peak outputs of 500 kW and 650 N.m of torque, coupled with an overall mass of less than 1 100 kg. The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 2,25 seconds, which makes it quicker than a current Formula One car (and a Formula E car).
This power is achieved thanks to a pair of electric motors coupled with a lithium-ion battery and a full energy recovery system. VW says that about 20 percent of the energy required is generated during the 19,99 km route thanks to all of the braking necessary for the 156 corners.
The ID R will be piloted up Pikes Peak by defending champion Romain Dumas. The 39-year-old Frenchman aims to break the current electric car record of 8: 57,118 on 24 June 2018 at the Pikes Peak event.
