Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Bernhard ten Brinke won Stage 11 of Dakar 2018, driving his Hilux to victory ahead of Peugeot’s Cyril Despres and Carlos Sainz.
Despite the win, the top ten in the overall standings remains unchanged, with Sainz still leading, Peugeot teammate Stephane Peterhansel (who finished fourth on the day) in second and Toyota’s Nasser Al-Attiyah (fifth on the eleventh stage) in third.
Ten Brinke is fourth overall, ahead of South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers, who placed sixth on Stage 11. Just three stages remain in the event.
“We were the second car into today’s stage, which made it really tricky to find the way,” said De Villiers. “Under the circumstances, it was much safer to ease up a little to ensure we didn’t miss any waypoints.”
South Africa’s Hennie de Klerk in a South Racing Volkswagen Amarok finished Stage 11 in 29th place, dropping him to 30th position overall. Lucio Alvarez, with South African navigator Rob Howie beside him in a Hilux, posted the 10th-fastest time on the eleventh stage, which keeps him in 11th overall.
