A new racing series featuring rear-wheel drive, diesel-powered, double-cab bakkies is set to kick off in Australia in 2017. Yes, you read that correctly: double-cab racing.
Supercars Australia says that it will launch the new motorsport category, dubbed SuperUtes, next year to replace the existing V8 Utes series (since production of the Falcon and Commodore utes has ceased in Australia). The new series will be open to all manufacturers, so that means we could see the likes of the Toyota Hilux duking it out with the Ford Ranger.
“V8 Utes has been a popular and entertaining category but with the changing automotive market it’s important that the Utes series becomes more market relevant,” Supercars managing director Matt Braid said.
“Utilising production based turbo-diesel dual-cab utes currently available for sale in the Australian market, SuperUtes will open the category to a variety of new manufacturers while still maintaining the spectacular and entertaining elements that make the category such a favourite with the fans,” he added.
The series will comprise six support events in the first season, with a view to expanding the calendar in 2018.
