Julian van der Watt (42) was the Formula Ford racer at the top of the results by the end of the Extreme Festival at Killarney on Saturday. The South African Single-Seater competitors contested round two in the Cape, three weeks after their Zwartkops Raceway start to the season.
Van der Watt took home the spoils, but it was Matthew Merton (5) who set the time-sheets alight. Initially it looked as though Robert Wolk (41) would take up first on the grid, but Merton snatched it from him with a blistering time in the final lap of qualifying.
Despite his first-place start, Merton had to concede the victory to Van der Watt, with Keagan Masters (44) crossing the line for third in a dramatic race that saw Nicholas van Weely (1) in the wall at the start of the main straight after he and Wolk made contact.
While Wolk continued, it was not without losing several places, costing him dearly in terms of points. Unfortunately for Van Weely the car was not repairable and he had to sit out the rest of the day.
In race two Wolk improved on his fortunes with a victory which bumped him up to third overall for the day.
With Wolk taking the flag, Werner Scholtz stepped up to claim second with Merton in third place. A first in race one and fourth in race two was enough to put Van der Watt at the top of the overall standings with Merton in second and Wolk third on the overall podium for the day.
The next round of the single-seater championship will be held at Zwartkops Raceway, this time on the public holiday, Tuesday 16 June.
