Volkswagen is said to be considering following its Japanese rival Toyota into Formula One in the future.
According to The Times, the German manufacturer is just waiting for Bernd Pischetsrieder, the former head of BMW, to head up the company in November.
It is believed that Pischetsrieder, who is in charge of the company’s Seat operation in Spain, will take over when VW chief executive Ferdinand Piech retires in November. Piech has not been keen to enter VW in motorsport and has ignored calls to do so.
But Pischetsrieder is a friend of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone and is a fan of the sport.
According to the British newspaper, engineers from VW’s headquarters are already working on an F1 prototype to present to Pischetsrieder.
“The company has some of the best auto engineers in the world,” a VW source told The Times. “While they are working on innovations for the Passat or the Golf or the Beetle, I am sure they are all itching to have a go at making an F1 car.”
