In the June 2016 issue, Sam Kruger wanted to know if an Opel Adam six-speed ‘box can be fitted to his Sonic without major modifications. I would like to know if fitting a tyre with a larger diameter (resulting in a larger circumference) would not solve his high engine revs problem?

We like your thinking, as a larger-diameter wheel will theoretically solve the higher engine-speed problem at the national speed limit. Unfortunately, it will result in many other disadvantages, including:
• Interference between the larger wheels and the vehicle body.
• All gears will be taller and first gear may be too high to effortlessly pull away.
• Speedometer calibration will now be out, including the odometer.
• Handling will be affected.
• Warranty will be voided.
Therefore, it is not the “silver bullet” solution Mr Kruger is looking for.
