TECH MAIL – Ground clearance

By: WebmasterAdmin

I own a 2006 Mazda3. How can I increase its ground clearance? The car scrapes the ground when traversing speed humps. It’s fitted with 205/55/R16 tyres.

Answer: Unfortunately, it’s impossible to increase ground clearance without negative side effects. By upping the tyre size (and rolling circumference), you affect the speedo calibration and gearing of the vehicle. You may also have interference between the tyre and bodywork in some circumstances. What’s more, by raising the suspension (longer/stiffer coil springs or spacers), you alter the vehicle’s handling and safety characteristics.
