BMW has teamed up with navigation-system provider INRIX to develop an intermodal navigation system for its i3 and i8 electric and hybrid models. This is the first in-car service that integrates public-transport options to reach your final destination. The system will monitor traffic conditions (and the state of charge of the vehicle) and propose public-transport options that will enable you to reach your destination faster. If you accept the system’s suggestion, the vehicle will guide you to the transition point or nearest charging station where you can park your vehicle. Step-by-step instructions, including a time schedule, will be sent to an app on your smartphone to guide you the rest of the way. Although this functionality is more relevant in Europe, it might be worthwhile to integrate the schedules of the Gautrain and rapid-transit bus services in the local application. The i3 and i8 will be launched in South Africa near the end of the year.
