The Datsun GO is one of the most affordable vehicles in our market, but upon its launch it received a lukewarm reception from the motoring media. Eyebrows were raised when it was announced the GO would feature neither ABS nor airbags as standard (although the top-of-the-range Lux model was recently equipped with a driver’s airbag). There are thousands of vehicles on our roads without the aforementioned safety systems and, we assume, many drivers who are happy to forego automotive safety technology for the sake of their independence.
It’s therefore somewhat ironic that Datsun South Africa has launched the Datsun GO simulator, featuring actual GO components, to provide virtual driver training for learner drivers. “In order to improve safety on our roads, it’s crucial to develop drivers’ understanding of traffic rules and facilitate the learning experience with an affordable learning programme,” says Des Fenner, general manager of Datsun SA.
These simulators will be available in 10 Datsun dealerships around the country as part of phase one of the roll-out. The simulator boosts driver confidence by providing a real-world driving experience, including offering feedback on performance without the risks associated with learning on public roads. The virtual training programme is free when you buy a new GO. Although it’s a good idea in theory, we’d prefer it if the GO came equipped with ABS as standard instead.
