Thirsty first car

By: CAR magazine

My parents bought me my first car, a 2002 Jeep Wrangler 4,0-litre Sahara (which exceeded my expectations). I need some advice on improving the Jeep’s fuel consumption, though. It runs on large 4×4 BigHorn Maxxis tyres, which add to the excessive fuel consumption of the straight-six petrol engine. I was thinking of replacing the wheels with standard Jeep wheels (the obvious first change that comes to mind), but have no idea which combination of tyres and rims is the best. What do you think?

Answer: Fuel consumption will remain a problem, whichever wheels you fit, because the Wrangler is inherently thirsty. Changing your driving style will have the biggest impact, but that too won’t solve the problem. Sadly, if you’re focused on fuel consumption, you may have to change to a more frugal vehicle.
