Last year, we opted out of voting for the A3 because the line-up had consisted of only the three-door version. Since casting our ballots for 2013’s Top 12, the Sportback version was added to the range – bringing the total hatchback model count to a staggering 17 – and in the process forced us to reconsider what the elements are that produce an award-winning compact hatchback. Yes, there are cheaper cars in this segment. Some are bigger and better equipped. Others offer more exciting styling. But, none can match the A3 range’s astonishing span of abilities. Whether it has to play the role of family hold-all, business commuter, preppy playmobile or enthusiasts’ hot hatch, it does so with aplomb and a touch more style than last year’s victor, the equally excellent VW Golf. The A3 truly is a car for all reasons.
Runners Up:
Volkswagen Golf
It lost by a hair’s breadth, and only because the Audi trumps it on desirability. From the R252 500 1,2 TSI to the flagship R397 500 GTI DSG, there isn’t a dud in the range. If you can’t quite stretch to the A3, this is the car to get.
Volvo V40
Failing to clinch a spot in the top three last year, this year we promoted the V40 after further exposure to the line-up. We like the turbocharged powertrains and love the understated design and fuss-free character.

LOOK OUT FOR
Mazda looks set to finally offer formidable competition in this segment when the new 3 debuts before year-end. The range is yet to be confirmed, but we expect the full range of SkyActiv engines. Also keep an eye out for the new Peugeot 308 in the third quarter.
