In a new Leisure Wheels series, Head of Content Mark Keohane, reveals what is in his garage each week, starting with the BMW 420d Gran Coupe M Sport Package.
My brother was always the BMW man in the family, I was never a fan of the 3-series silhouette of the early 2000s and I remained impartial to the German manufacturer’s other models. I remained impartial too after meeting my partner, who has always loved Beamers and has aspired for years to drive the brutish X6.
I must confess that the impartiality lay in never really experiencing BMW’s range, and after having the luxury of driving two of their latest offerings this year, I now have a bit of a stronger opinion.
I’m impressed.
BMW are getting it so right in recent years. One of the first cars that I pulled into our garage this year was the 420d Gran Coupé M Sport Package. For someone that is big on style, more so than speed, the M Sport package is a lovely option. The trimmings make for a luxurious interior, and the classic BMW Shadow Line gives an already spectacular vehicle some extra presence on the road. The Sports Suspension and Run-Flat 19” tyres also just make for such a comfortable cruise.
I have a one-year-old daughter and I live in a suburb of hills and stop streets. There is very little reason for me to want the engine and the noise of an M4, but I love the style and elegance of the latest 4-series, with all the little extras that the M package offers.
The 420d Gran Coupe is as stylish as it is practical, and on the very rare occasion that my two grown up children are driving with me, and not in their own cars, the whole family of five fits in comfortably, along with the baby seat too.
In releasing a four-door sport coupe, a manufacturer always runs the risk of sacrificing on something, be it comfort or aesthetic. The 420d passes with flying colours for both. And for those wondering, I am quite a fan of the much-maligned “kidney grill”. That may be my only controversial opinion about this car, because I can’t imagine there is much that others would find fault with.
To my brother Shane and to my partner Gillian, it took some time, but I get it now!
