Confirmed: The G-Class is going electric

Many will see this as heresy, but we knew it was only a matter of time before it happened.

Mercedes-Benz finally admitted that it is working on an all-electric G-Class.

The confirmation came via a tweet from Sascha Pallenberg, quoting Daimler CEO, Ola Kallenius. In short, the tweet confirmed that the G-Class will form part of Merc’s EQ sub-brand. According to Kallenius, the German manufacturer has invested $11 billion in EQ, which will consists of ten different electric vehicles by 2022. We’ve already seen the first EQ and now we know the G-Class will also be one of those ten.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Mercedes electrifies the G-Class. Will it follow the same route as the EQC, or will Mercedes implement a model specific solution.

The EQC uses an electric motor on each axle, which results in a 300kW/760Nm combined power output. Mercedes claims a range of 415km for the EQC.

The same setup could work in the G-Class. Mercedes would have to chuck out a load of mechanical components in order to make it work, but at least the overall shape lends itself nicely to battery storage.

We doubt it will have the same range, as the G-Class is hardly known for having a low drag coefficient.
