The massive family called Ford Ranger is about to get bigger. In early 2025, Ford is set to roll out its first-ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid.

The new model – announced or Australian markets – will combine the renowned attributes of the Ranger, including its off-road prowess, towing capacity, and payload handling, with the added benefit of zero-tailpipe emissions and increased torque.

Ford Australia’s CEO and President, Andrew Birkic, remarked, “The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid stands as an emblem of balance – be it for work, leisure, or family drives. It provides the freedom of zero-emission drives for shorter distances and the efficiency of hybrid power for optimal on- and off-road dynamics.”

With the introduction of Pro Power Onboard™, Ranger enthusiasts can now enjoy the convenience of powering remote camps or worksites without the need for an external generator.

The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid boasts a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine integrated with an electric motor and a charging battery system. This synergy allows for over 45 kilometres of pure electric driving, aiding fuel savings and reducing emissions – the practicality of which has been justified by the fact that over half of Australian Ranger drivers travel 40km or less daily.

Matching its peers, the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid has a projected maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg. This hybrid iteration will also incorporate the Pro Power Onboard feature, facilitating on-site and campsite power needs directly from outlets located in the cabin and cargo bed. This obviates the need for heavy and noisy generators, making room for additional cargo.

Flexibility remains at the forefront, with the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid offering varied EV drive modes, allowing users to choose when and how to harness the EV battery power. In alignment with the Ranger legacy, the new hybrid will also be equipped with four-wheel drive, selectable driving modes, and a suite of safety and driver-assist features.

Highlighting Ford’s commitment to electrification, Birkic added, “With the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid, our customers step confidently towards an electrified horizon, backed by the unmatched assurance of the Ranger series. This latest addition expands Ford Australia’s electrified fleet, joining the ranks of Mach-E, E-Transit, E-Transit Custom, and Puma BEV.”
