The “Freelander” namesake has been absent from Jaguar Land Rover’s portfolio for a decade. However, now, following a hiatus of 10 years, this badge is scheduled to make its return. However, it won’t be no Freelander of old; the new generation will be fully electric.

This announcement comes after both the British marque and Chinese car manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent to revive the “Freelander” brand for a range of emissions-free SUVs, which will be produced in collaboration between the two automakers at Chery’s assembly plant in Changshu, China.

“Today we are taking this important step to underline our commitment to China. By working together to develop new models of collaboration for the EV market, combined with the appeal of the Freelander brand, we promise an exciting future for CJLR,” said Adrian Mardell, Chief Executive Officer of JLR.

According to a report from CarNewsChina, the upcoming Freelander models will share several components with Chery vehicles. This includes, among many others items, the platform on which the Freelanders will be based. The publication has further mentioned that the latter will come in the shape of Chery’s E0X underpinnings.
