There are some impressive 4x4s out there, but there isn’t a single model that’ll travel through more than 3 metres of water without breaking down. That’s why manufacturers tend to state a wading depth, so the owner will know how deep he can go without drowning himself or the vehicle.
This wading depth is fairly important in countries where regular flooding occurs. Not the kind we had in SA recently, but proper Tsunami flooding like they experience in Southeast Asia.
A company called Fromm recently revealed its Concept One, which is an all-electric inner city commuter big enough for four people. It’s like any other EV out there, except for the fact that it was designed to float in case of an emergency.
On the water it’s driven by two electric motors, situated in the front wheels. The combined torque output of these two motors is 560Nm, so in theory it should be able to overtake even the fastest Jet Ski.
At the moment the Concept One is nothing more than a digital rendering, but it does make sense.
Let’s hope it makes it into production, if only to make life easier for all the fishermen out there.
