The Gumtree World RX of South Africa – the first-ever WRX event in this country – took place last weekend, with more than 27 000 people packing out the historic Killarney circuit in Cape Town .
Johan Kristofferson had already clinched the world title but that didn’t dull his competitiveness as the Swede swept through to a thrilling win in the season finale in his Volkswagen Polo GTI. Timmy Hansen in a Peugeot 208 took second and Mattias Ekstrom was third in his Audi S1, a result which clinched the championship runner-up position for him.
Gumtree’s Head of Core Business, Claire Cobbledick described the landmark event as “a great success with the most amazing vibe and thrilling action throughout”. She said the pitwalks were a particular hit with many fans getting a close-up look at the cars being fixed between heats and having a chance to interact with some of the biggest names in the sport.
World RX sees the world’s best rallycross drivers in their RX Supercars, with over 447kW (600bhp), delivering wheel-to-wheel heats and a final on a specially constructed, mixed asphalt-and-dirt surface.
