The debut of Hyundai’s first-ever bakkie is getting closer, but some details seem to have leaked ahead of the time.
This all-new Tucson-based bakkie will go into production next year and unlike every other bakkie on our market, the Santa Cruz will not be based on a ladder frame platform.

US-based automotive publication, Car and Driver, is now reporting that the Santa Cruz will only be available in double cab configuration. This means it will be aimed squarely at the leisure double cab segment.
Car and Driver are also reporting that it will only be available with petrol engines – a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol four-cylinder and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. Hyundai has access to fantastic turbocharged diesel engines, but considering the current negative attitude towards diesel engines, this petrol only approach makes sense.
According to the publication, the Santa Cruz will cost somewhere in the region of $25 000, which, at the current exchange rate, is less than R500 000.
