HYUNDAI SOAPBOX CAR – DIY

By: CAR magazine

Hyundai has released full detailed instructions on how to build a soapbox car for your kids, or you know, yourself.

Soapbox cars were a thing in the 60s and 70s, a DIY project that pops built in the garage to keep the kids out of the house and playing in the street.

INSPIRATION

The Hyundai soapbox was designed and engineered by Hyundai Europe Design Centre using materials that you can get at your local hardware store, and they’re affordable. Inspired by the 45 Concept car they simplified it to a DIY project for friends and family, promoting quality time with the ones you love.

In recent months, spending time together as a family has become more valuable to people. We wanted to create a fun project that would give families and friends an enjoyable project that brings them together. Of course, the Hyundai Soapbox had to stay affordable, so our designers developed it using materials that can be easily found in a local DIY store” said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, vice-president of Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe

FLINTSTONE POWER

True to the concept of a soapbox, there is no powertrain – or, as Thomas Bürkle Head of Hyundai Europe Design Center put it: “The powertrain is gravity. Your own motivation. The power of your own two legs when you push it back uphill.”

DIY

The PDF download has some pretty clear instructions that state the Hyundai is not responsible for any irresponsible use of the soapbox car, and that it’s not for use in traffic. Watch the video below for more details and download the Soapbox Project PDF for DIY specs and instructions.
