When it comes to claimed fuel consumption, things work a bit differently in the USA.
Manufacturers are allowed to test their own vehicles and post the resulting figures, but the government body in charge of environmental affairs, the EPA, can audit these figures by running their own tests on vehicles. Currently, it does so with around 15% to 20% of new models.
One of the models selected this year was the all-new Jeep Wrangler, specifically the two-door equipped with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol.
This unit is selling exceptionally well in the USA, thanks to its stellar power output and low consumption compared to the old 3.6-litre petrol V6.
It produces 201kW and 400Nm of torque, which is slightly down in power to the V6, but it uses around 50% less fuel.
The EPA recently verified a consumption figure of 10.2l/100km in town, 9.4l/100km on the highway and a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.8l/100km.
These figures may not seem all that great to diesel owners, but all the Wrangler fans out there may just be salivating at the prospect at driving past a fuel station without stopping.
