Teased in the form of concept cars since 2019, the production model of the Mercedes-Benz all-electric G-Class has finally been unveiled, marking a significant entry into the electric off-road vehicle market.
Named the G 580, the latest member of the G-Wagn family leverages EQ Technology to enhance the classic G-Class design with an electric powertrain, consisting of four motors delivering a combined 432 kW and 1,163 Nm of torque. While preserving the iconic, rugged shape of the traditional G-Class, the new version includes modern technologies and operates with zero emissions, standing as a significant addition to the field of luxury off-road vehicles

The G 580 is equipped with a 116 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a range of up to 472 kilometres per charge by WLTP standards. Its structure includes a strengthened ladder frame adapted to support the electric drivetrain while maintaining the durability and off-road capabilities expected of the G0-Class.Each of the four electric motors in the G-Class can be controlled individually, generating a total power output of 432 kW. This configuration not only boosts off-road performance but also introduces features such as the G-TURN for nearly spot-on turns and “G-STEERING” for navigating tight spaces in rough terrain.
“With over 45 years of history, the G-Class has always integrated cutting-edge drive technology,” noted Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer. He emphasised that the new electric model enhances the iconic vehicle’s performance to new heights while maintaining its unique essence.
The electric G-Class also surpasses previous models in environmental adaptability, boasting a 100% grade capability on appropriate surfaces and a maximum water wading depth of 850 mm—150 mm more than its conventionally powered versions. Intelligent torque vectoring mirrors the function of traditional differential locks, improving both traction and control.
Aesthetically, the G 580 with EQ Technology features an optional black-panel radiator grille, air curtains, and a re-engineered hood to enhance aerodynamics. Inside, it includes the MBUX infotainment system, ambient lighting, and optional luxury features such as temperature-controlled cup holders and the Burmester 3D surround sound system.
Set to launch at a starting price of €142,621 EUR (approximately $152,715 USD), the G 580 will also offer an EDITION ONE model at the onset, priced just over $200,000 USD and including extended standard features and exclusive design elements.
