We know what you’re thinking: the Icon sure resembles the Nissan Juke. MG says, however, that the Icon is inspired by the MGs of old.
There’s no word yet on whether the vehicle will enter production, but there is no doubt that the small crossover segment is incredibly popular at the moment, with more and more manufacturers setting their sights on crossovers such as the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman. These two are at opposite ends of the price spectrum, however, and there is definitely room for another player to enter the market.
MG recently re-entered the South African market at the South African motors show, JIMS. The company will be looking to strengthen their sales base locally before bringing any risky products in – but on the other hand, such a daring car could just give them the stand-out value they had once before. That, of course, all depends on whether the Icon Crossover is even produced internationally.
The Icon Crossover is said to have a 1,5 litre turbocharged engine, and suicide doors at the back.
Keith Adams of ARonline spoke to the man behind the project – Stephen Harper (you can read more about the ideas behind the vehicle here). Harper explains that the project was about rediscovering MG’s heritage. Off the topic, he further speaks about the necessity for MG to gain more presence in the Chinese market – this will no doubt result in a considerable shift in product from what the marque was known for in the past.
