The e-Eveolution concept, which was on display at the recent Tokyo Motor Show, is prototype that the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) is using to illustrate the strategic direction of the manufacturer.
This has no doubt been influenced by it’s partnership in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and MMC states that this direction “reflects an adventurous and progressive mindset”.
The new concept is said to incorporate the strengths of an SUV and EV and the ability to integrate new systems for connected mobility.
In a press release MMC has said that it will accelerate product renewal and launch more new models – including in South Africa, where the Eclipse Cross compact crossover will make its local debut in 2018.
“Through technological advancements showcased in the e-EVOLUTION concept car, Mitsubishi will not only expand its world-wide customer base, but also its loyal following in South Africa,” says Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).
The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept features a 4WD electric drivetrain with three electric motors (one drives the front, while the second and third electric motors each power one of the rear wheels) and a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) system that couples the two rear motors to an electronically-controlled torque vectoring system.
This setup is combined with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will feature feature Level 4 autonomy, according to Mitsubishi.
A plethora of sensors allow the AI system to “instantly read changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent”. This is with the idea of coordinating the driver’s intent with the vehicle’s performance. While, the vehicle’s instrument panel acts like a level in an electronic viewfinder, makeing it easier to sense the state of the vehicle during driving.
The e-Evolution concept features a sharply slanted front windshield, short overhangs and high ground clearance, giving the the SUV a a tough, yet sleek appearance.
The manufacturer’s new design language displayed in the e-Evolution concept is known as “Robust and Ingenious.” According to the brand, MMC vehicles of the future should be “sincere, tough, and functional” and simultaneously “clever, resourceful, style-setting and technologically advanced”.
