The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently passed a ruling that will make the fitment of a reverse camera standard on every car sold in the US.
The process will start slowly in 2016 when only 10% of a manufacturer’s cars will need to have a reverse camera as standard. By May 2017 the percentage will have to be upped to 40%, leading to a 100% fitment percentage by 2019.
It seems like a drastic step, but the NHTSA claims that approximately 210 people a year are killed by reversing cars. Most of these incidents involve toddlers and elderly adults.
The NHTSA also believes that 58 to 69 lives will be saved annually by passing this regulation.
