Stronger together – Opposite Lock partners with LA Sport

By: CAR magazine

In August 2019 Opposite Lock announced that they would be partnering with well-known 4×4 outfitters LA Sport.

The partnering of these two industry stalwarts means a larger offering for customers as LA Sport benefits from the extensive Opposite Lock dealer network.

“We saw an opportunity to grow our product range, expand our offering and improve the distribution of the LA Sport products.” said Darrell van Zeil, CEO of Opposite Lock.

Lionel Lewis, founder of LA Sport is well known in the industry, has built some amazing vehicles and has been the first to attempt many things. He also has a vast product knowledge that remains an asset to any 4×4 business.

“LA Sport sees this partnership as a step forward. We were the first to have our own TV show and the first to attempt a variety of conversions on the latest off-road vehicles. Doing all these projects over the years has seen us gain invaluable experience in what works and what doesn’t.” said Lewis

The LA Sport product offering includes the LAS Profender suspension kits, LAS Bullbars, LAS protection gear, rear bumpers, behind bumper winches, towbars and snorkels. LA Sport are particularly proud of these products as they have been designed and developed here in South Africa and they are produced to LA Sports high standards and specifications by trusted local and international suppliers.

The LAS range of Bullbars is a unique LAS design that has been developed in South Africa and is then built by a factory in Thailand. The only reason for this decision was because of the time saving that is gained when getting the product from the concept stage to a product that is ready for fitment.

The Profender suspension kits follow a similar approach with the shocks manufactured in Thailand to the exact specifications determined by LA Sport. These shock absorbers are then paired with locally manufactured springs.

The LAS products now benefit from the Opposite Lock supply chain with distribution through Opposite Lock dealers and stores, which include over 200 in South Africa. For the customer, this means more choice thanks to a larger range of products.

“The LAS Products are extremely robust while still offering great value for money. We are hoping that with these products added to our portfolio we can dramatically increase our export business, especially within Africa, as there is a huge demand for this kind of offering on the continent.” said van Zeil

The small, highly skilled team at LA Sport, led by Lionel, will focus on the product and ensure that it is perfect. In the workshop, they will concentrate on research and development as well as special fitments. They have vast experience in building custom vehicles that have stood the test of time and will continue to service customers with this offering.

“It is nice to be able to focus on what is important again, I am enjoying being hands-on in the workshop and reconnecting with many of our old customers,” said Lewis

The duo believes that there is still room for good growth in the local 4×4 industry as it remains a great springboard into Africa and all the adventures that the continent has to offer.
