Nissan recently registered the name “Terra” at its Malaysian patents office, which suggests that the Japanese company is considering an electric SUV.
The Nissan Terra concept was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2012 as a hydrogen fuel cell SUV concept, also equipped with a Nissan Leaf electric powertrain.
That concept used the first-generation Leaf’s electric motor to power the front wheels, but added a hydrogen fuel-cell system to power the rear wheels, making the car all-wheel drive.
Currently the Japanese brand’s electric line-up includes the Leaf, the e-NV200 Combi people carrier and the e-NV200 van, but this recent patent suggests that the Nissan Terra will be an all-electric SUV model, which is expected to share its platform and drivetrain with the 2018 Leaf.
As reported by Autocar, Nissan’s CEO Hiroto Saikawa has said that two new EV offerings would be in the company’s lineup before 2020. Nissan’s former Chief Designer, also said that a new all-electric SUV and sedan would be added to the model line-up.
