The annual Festival of Motoring serves as the perfect event for automakers to unveil a variety of new and updated products in South Africa, and, of course, allow attendees the opportunity to get up close with the brands’ current and upcoming offerings. The 2024 instalment was no different. Among the cars that have made their first public appearances on SA shores at this year’s Festival of Motoring (30 August to 1 September, 2024) are the highly anticipated seventh-generation Ford Mustang, new Suzuki Swift, fresh-faced Volkswagen T-Cross, all of which have already been shown to the media, and the SUV you see here — the Volvo XC90 “Adventure Beast”.

Following in the footsteps of Volvo’s “The Beast” and XC60 “The Beast 2.0”, this XC90 was developed in collaboration with Swedish company Thule. As its name would suggest, the XC90 “Adventure Beast” is equipped with an array of Thule accessories — such as the firm’s Approach M rooftop tent, roof rack and a tow-bar-mounted bicycle rack — to position it as the “ideal” vehicle for South African outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to the Thule equipment, this XC90 has been fitted with larger all-terrain tyres, wrapped around its 20-inch alloy wheels.
The XC90 “Adventure Beast” is based on the XC90 T8 Recharge. As a reminder, this model employs the Swedish manufacturer’s 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain, which comprises a 233 kW/400 N.m turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 107 kW/309 N.m electric motor for a combined power output of 340 kW and 709 N.m of torque, sent to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
