Tractor Girl Visits the South Pole [w/video]

By: CAR magazine

Manon Osservoort, known as Tractor Girl, has travelled the world on a tractor. Now she has managed to get to the South Pole in a Massey Ferguson.

In 1958 Everest conqueror Edmund Hilary led the first mechanized expedition to the South Pole making use of Ferguson TE20 tractors. Osservoort followed in the footsteps of Hilary, and her team consisted of polar explorers, a mechanic, a videographer, a logistic expert and two drivers who piloted a couple of Arctic Trucks Hiluxes as backup vehicles.

The team started out at the Russian Novo research base, and it took them 16 days to make it to the pole. The group’s traveling speed fluctuated between 0,8 km/h and 10 km/h, depending on conditions.

The Massey Ferguson MF 5610 tractor was equipped with extras such as a fuel trailer, winch and spare tyres, and, because it is so difficult to restart an engine in Antarctica’s extreme cold, had to run non-stop since the expedition started on 22 November.
