By: CAR magazine

There are a variety of performance-focused models in Toyota’s portfolio. No, we’re not talking about the GR-Sport derivatives, such as the Hilux GR-S, the latest version of which we sampled on the local launch, and Land Cruiser GR-S; we’re specifically talking about the fully-fledged GR variants. The latter includes the Japanese firm’s thrill-inducing GR Yaris and GR Corolla hot hatches, fun-to-drive GR86, and GR Supra.

However, Tomoya Takahashi, head of Toyota’s performance division, feels there is a noticeable gap in the brand’s GR model lineup. It comes in the shape of a high-performance SUV. Colour us interested.

In a conversation with CarExpert, Takahashi san expressed the necessity for a GR SUV (in the future, at least). He believes a Toyota SUV of this ilk will not only broaden the appeal of the GR brand, but also provide customers with a performance-focused model that is more family-oriented. Of course, a fair bet would be that, if this model is, indeed, made, it would excel off the beaten track, too.
