With three drivers currently vying for a seat in the second Mitsubishi Lancer used in WRC, the team could pit two young rally aces head-to-head in upcoming events as part of a three-car programme.
This comes as several teams have reviewed their involvement in the sport amid soaring costs.
Sven Quandt, Mitsubishi’s head of motorsport, has said that the team could be expanded to give the younger drivers – Gian-Luigi Galli, Daniel Sola and Kristian Sohlberg – more exposure to the new car.
“Towards the middle of the year, we’d like to run three cars on some rallies,” reported Quandt as saying. “But it depends on whether or not the cars come back to us in one piece on the preceding events.
It’s a big risk, because it means we’ll be pitting one or two of the youngsters against each other, and they will want to show they are fastest. But, this is competition, so they should be used to it.”
The team would still only be able to nominate two drivers to claim the manufacturers points, though.
