CARtoday.com on Friday announced the launch of the new Fun and Games module, in which we review the latest PC and Playstation 2 racing and automotive-related games. To date, we have archived 18 reviews and will next month review the eagerly-awaited Playstation title .
Reviewed in the October 2003 edition of CAR, Rockstar Games’ set the standard for the PC street-racing game genre with its good keyboard support, handbrake turns, articulated jumps, fizz-pop in-game visual and audio special effects. But is newer to the scene – does the EA Games title have the goods to depose the king, MCII? Here’s how they stack up:
Most authentic cars: NFSU. The cars used in the American title have been officially licensed by manufacturers; those in MCII haven’t.
Best scenarios: MCII. In the British title, you can race in Los Angeles, Tokyo or Paris, and on streets, rooftops, parking garages, public parks, canals and freeways. NFSU finishes a distant second.
Best gameplay: MCII gets the nod over NFSU because it has keys for handbrake turns and a spin recovery function. The game physics are better, and cars incur damage when crashed or dinged.
Customisation: NFSU sets a benchmark that MCII simply cannot match.
Graphics: MCII has better textured backgrounds and uses light and shadows well to create a twilight effect. NFSU employs brighter colours and has excellent water, dust and neon effects. A tie.
Sound: MCII’s sound effects are just as good as NFSU’s, but the latter has a stronger soundtrack of pukka rock and hip-hop cuts.
Longevity: MCII offers more in terms of racing modes: Career, Circuit, Arcade, Battle and Multiplayer, in addition to a race editor.
Verdict: MCII is the best all-round game. Having said that, NFSU has a fresher feel to it and is excellent for those gamers addicted to eye candy.
