The Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) technology, recently also introduced in Audi’s TT 3,2 V6, has been inspired by racing technology, and features twin automated clutches that allow for rapid gear changes with no break in the power flow from the engine.

The transmission allows the driver the choice of changing gear sequentially with the gear lever or steering wheel paddles, or leaving it all to a microprocessor, which provides smooth automatic shifts .

The DSG transmission is largely based on a conventional manual unit but is equipped with a two-shaft gearbox with two separate clutches, stored one inside of the other. As soon as one clutch is released and clutch number two takes up the drive, the next-higher gear is pre-selected. Power from the engine reaches the road with scarcely any interruption, and there’s no noticeable jerking as the gears are engaged.

Priced at R250 500, the A3 2,0 TDI DSG comes standard with a five-year/100 000 km Audi Freeway maintenance plan.

The model is available only in Ambition trim, which includes a high level of standard specification and comfort items, including electric front windows with one-touch control, dual zone climate control, remote central locking and a front-loading CD player.
