Unofficial shots of Subaru’s B9X crossover MPV reveal the new arrival to be every bit of the non-looker initial sketches indicated it would be. But get used to that face, since its probably here to stay…
Labelled as a “crossover utility vehicle” by Subaru, the SUV has seating for up to seven occupants and spells a great step into new market territory for Subaru. As these spyshots from suggest, this new vehicle shows a radical departure from the Japanese manufacturer’s existing designs. Subaru has also decided to change the name from the initial B9X to B9 Tribeca, after a New York neighbourhood.
Though Subaru has never been a style leader, this will be the first vehicle to show off the new family face under the guidance of former Alfa designer, Andreas Zapatinas. Other than the new shield-like grille, the B9X (to be called B9 Tribeca when it goes on sale) will also pioneer new facia designs for the company.
Using Subaru’s legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, the Tribeca will probably be powered by a 3,0-litre powerplant.
Fred Adcock, executive vice president of Subaru of America recently described the vehicle as one that would “appeal to a larger audience”.
“The new B9X is the logical step for a current Legacy or Outback owner looking to move up in size, flexibility, feature content and refinement,” Adcock said.
Subaru’s radical SUV was meant to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show, starting next Wednesday, January 12, in Detroit. However, it was snapped ahead of its official showcasing while on location for a video shoot in the US.
The B9 Tribeca will be manufactured at Subaru’s Lafayette plant in Indiana, US and targeted primarily at US buyers, where it will be released later this year.
